Tips For Choosing The Right Retirement Community For Independent Living And Beyond

Independent Living and Retirement Living for seniors
Many seniors want to live in a community that offers residences, apartments or villas with easy maintenance, and a wide variety of fitness and social activities. Some communities for retirement-aged people offer a variety of living arrangements with varying amounts of independence. In many communities household maintenance tasks like yard maintenance, roof maintenance, laundry and linen service, meals and transportation are a part of the community's services.
Independent Living at a Retirement Community is ideal for seniors who:
- are fit and self sufficient to start, and want to live in a secure community;
- want to downsize their home;
- would rather live with other like minded seniors;
- have the security that should their health change they have a continuity of services available.
Independent living residences are easy-to-maintain villas or apartments designed for people over age 55. Many villas and apartments are specifically built with minimal stairs, handrails, and other aids for aging residents. Seniors who reside in these communities can live independent, but can employ cleaning or nursing services on their own, affording personal freedom.
Many independent living communities are part of a continuing care retirement community and offer assisted living where residents receive assistance with dressing, bathing, eating and other activities of daily living . Continuing care retirement communities also provide skilled nursing and medical care should an individual's health require more round the clock care. In most cases residents of retirement communities can move between assisted living and skilled nursing care as their care needs change over time.
Retirement Independent Living communities also can offer some type of community meeting place or center, and many have recreational, social, club or dining facilities open to the entire community. The size of the community can vary from a few hundred seniors to thousands.
Keep the following things in mind when choosing a Retirement Independent Living community:
- reputation
- activities
- likeminded feeling about the residents
- value of investment/entry fee
- access to doctors and medical facilities
- security
- available community services
- amenities and food
Perhaps the biggest hurdle to finding the right retirement living community is anticipating the future, and finding a community that will adjust to a senior's changing needs as they age.
